Altona Town Council is taking action to address public transportation needs in the community.

The group has engaged Eco-West Canada, a national not-for-profit organization based in Winnipeg with a mandate of promoting the sustainable economic development rural municipalities, to conduct a public transportation and fleet optimization study for the community.

"They've been doing a large study on the east side of the (Red) River [...] and so, we invited them to sit down to see if we could be a part of a study," explained Mayor Harv Schroeder, noting public transportation has been a long-standing need in the community.

The data collected will be used to seek funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) for a possible public transportation project in Altona.

"They definitely have the inside track to get some of those funds," added Schroeder.

As well, community groups will be consulted in an effort to find local solutions and partnerships to help meet this demand.
