Many Strathmore residents have given their reactions to the news of Peavey Mart's upcoming closure.

One resident, hobby farmer Joanna Emslie, said she was disappointed to hear about the hardware-agriculture store shutting down.

"It kept all of the other businesses honest. The more you have, the better the prices are," said Emslie. "I do shop around, but I find that if I can find one thing at Peavey Mart, I'll pick up something else as well."

"We went there for fencing supplies, gardening, knick-knacks, you name it. It's pretty tough and it narrows down our options for where we're going to go. You get used to where you shop."

Emslie has been a regular at Peavey Mart since 2002 when she moved to the Strathmore area. Over the years, Emslie's own children had jobs at the store.

"I feel that for the employees," added Emslie. "I talked to a couple of them, and they just found out on Thursday, and over the weekend Peavey Mart put it out for all the world to see. It's sad."

Local farmers aren't the only groups impacted by the store's closure. Shawn Stobbe is a business owner who also expects to see the closure affect the community.

"You see companies like Peavey Mart have some struggles in the local market area, and as a business owner, it's super challenging out there," said Stobbe.

"With the cost of leases, rent, wages, utilities, and then you throw in the competitive nature of things like Amazon, I think it's starting to impact and hurt local businesses."

Stobbe runs Smoke Shack Pellets and Grills and hopes to stock up on some of the items that customers usually buy at Peavey Mart.

"When companies like Peavey Mart can't survive, it definitely puts an impact on the local community, with customers possibly driving to Calgary."

Stobbe said he was surprised to hear that the store would be closing down.

"Just because they're large companies doesn't mean they're financially stable at all. It's a very capital-intensive business. You need to keep putting money into it."

Although a specific closing date for the Strathmore Peavey Mart hasn't been given, the company said they're expecting to have all stores closed by the end of April.
