Saskatchewan's rich and diverse history will take centre stage as communities across the province celebrate the 20th anniversary of Archives Week. Proclaimed by the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport, Archives Week 2025 runs from February 2 to 8, showcasing the invaluable work of archivists in preserving and sharing the province’s heritage.
The Saskatchewan Council for Archives and Archivists (SCAA) is once again leading the celebrations, highlighting the province’s historical collections and the dedicated individuals who safeguard them. This year’s events include a variety of in-person and virtual activities, designed to connect the public with Saskatchewan’s past.
Virtual Video Showcase Returns
One of the highlights of Archives Week 2025 is the return of the SCAA’s virtual video event, which features submissions from archival institutions across the province. These short videos highlight the successes and achievements of the past year and provide a behind-the-scenes look at the work of archivists. Each day during Archives Week, a new video will be shared online, allowing audiences to explore Saskatchewan’s history from anywhere. The videos will be available on the SCAA website and social media platforms, ensuring accessibility for all.
Participating archives include the Archives de Bellevue, Archives of Humboldt and District Museum & Gallery, City of Saskatoon Archives, Clayton McLain Memorial Museum, Climax Community Museum, Craik Oral History, Friends of the Lloydminster Regional Archives, Grand Coteau Heritage & Cultural Centre, Melfort & District Museum, Moose Jaw Public Library, Northern Saskatchewan Archives, Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan, Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Regina, Saskatoon Heritage Festival, and Whitewood Tourism & Heritage Association.
The virtual initiative has been widely recognized, earning the Heritage Saskatchewan Living Heritage Award in 2023 for its effective communication and education of Saskatchewan’s cultural heritage.
Provincial Archives Marks 80 Years with Special Event
Adding to the celebrations, the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan will commemorate its 80th anniversary with a special event, The Thrill of Discovery. Taking place on Wednesday, February 5, at 7 p.m. at 2440 Broad Street in Regina, the event will feature a presentation by renowned historian Frank Korvemaker, displays from local archives, and a new exhibit showcasing unique and fascinating records. The event is free to attend, and refreshments will be served.
"The Provincial Archives has been preserving Saskatchewan's history for eight decades," said SaskBuilds and Procurement Minister David Marit. "This event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our province’s past and recognize the invaluable contributions of archives in keeping our history alive."
A Celebration of Saskatchewan’s Heritage
Throughout Archives Week, communities across Saskatchewan will host a variety of events, including workshops, film screenings, photo exhibits, and open houses. These activities provide opportunities for residents to engage with their heritage and gain a deeper appreciation for the work of archival institutions.
"Saskatchewan’s Provincial Archives make a significant contribution to our province by maintaining the historical and cultural richness found in our communities," said Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Alana Ross. "It is important to recognize the substantial scope and value of heritage conservation, as this work leads to a deeper understanding and appreciation of our provincial identity."
