A Death Cafe is coming to Chestermere this week.
However, it's not what you think.
The event takes place at the Chestermere Public Library on Wednesday (Feb. 5) and involves a group-directed discussion of death with no agenda, objective, or themes.
"While Death Cafe has been around since 2011 as an organization, they allow other places to host, and this is the first time the event is hosted in Chestermere," said Spencer McDonald, marketing and social media coordinator with the library.
"We found out about Death Cafes through another library that was hosting them. We decided to follow suit and try it out."
The event offers residents an open and welcoming environment to discuss death, which is usually seen as a taboo subject.
The library mentioned that the event does not serve as a supplement to grief support or a counselling session.
"The whole objective is to increase the awareness of death because Western civilization is so removed from death as a concept," added McDonald. "If we can provide an area where people can talk and have those conversations, it's a perfect opportunity for that."
The event runs from 6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. and is free to attend with no registration required. The library will also provide free tea and coffee.
