Strathmore resident Taura Fox Walker is taking on a fitness challenge for mental health.

The Push-Up Challenge is run by the Canadian Mental Health Organization (CMHA), with participants raising funds by doing 2,000 pushups between February 11 and 28.

Fox Walker said that her friend asked her to take part in the event.

"I started with 10 pushups, and I tried to do them on the floor. I could not," said Fox Walker. "My husband said why don't I do it against the counter to build proper posture?"

Fox Walker is a mental health advocate, especially during the colder months of the year.

"I moved to southern Alberta because of the sunlight, but even with all the sunshine, we still get locked in during the cold. It's really important to do all the little things that add up to wellbeing all year round."

She's taking part in the challenge with a group. In total, they are looking to raise $500 for CMHA.

"Whether or not a person can participate in fundraising, everyone benefits by adding a little more exercise every day. When we have a challenge, we have a goal, a plan, and we're going to get somewhere."

According to CMHA, there are many benefits to staying active. The group claims that just 15 minutes of moderate exercise can provide a mood-enhancing effect.

Anyone interested in taking on the challenge can register on the CMHA website. Throughout its history, CMHA has raised almost $500,000 to bring mental health services to more people across Canada.
