Staff with the Town of Strathmore spoke about the history of its municipal building.
The current facility, located on Park Lane Drive, has been in use since 2021.
"As Strathmore has grown, so too has its need for a town hall that can serve its residents effectively," wrote the town. "Over the years, expansions and new buildings have been necessary to accommodate a growing population, increased municipal services, and the evolving needs of the community."
The municipal building was first formed back in 1910, with council meetings taking place on the second floor of Strathmore's original fire hall.
"In 1956, a bid was made to acquire an additional office near the fire hall," added the town, with the original fire hall located near what is now Discounted Liquor Wagon and Strathmore Florist.
A new town office was purchased in 1968 right next to the fire hall. The office was used for almost 20 years before becoming overcrowded in the early 1980s.
"The new town office on Westchester Road opened in February 1982 with the official grand opening occurring on May 28. With the new office came the town’s first computer, which was purchased to provide more efficient service in administering the town’s financial affairs."
The town used the office until considerations for a new building began in 2009.
"The town hall at Westridge Road was built in 1982 when Strathmore’s population was just 3,199 people and the workforce numbered 25. Over the years, temporary trailers and additional lease space provided accommodation for a growing municipality."
On January 1, 2021, the current Strathmore municipal building opened to the public, with the town paying off the $14.5 million building in 2025.
According to the town, the new building allows for cost-effective service delivery by getting rid of the need for leased spaces.
