After serving as MP of Bow River for the last decade, Martin Shields will not run for re-election.
The statement was made in a news release sent out on Friday (Feb. 7).
"I will not be seeking re-election in the next federal election; it is time for a new representative to serve the interests and the people of this riding," said Shields.
The MP thanked his family, his teams, and his constituents for their support during his tenure. He also recognized the Mayors, Reeves, Chief, and Council Members of his riding as being "fantastic community leaders".
"It has been an immense pleasure to work alongside my fellow Conservative MPs as we served as the official opposition, especially my Alberta colleagues," added Shields.
"This country has bright Conservative leaders, and I look forward to watching their success in the years to come."
The next federal election is expected to take place in the fall. The new conservative candidate for the Bow River riding has not been determined.
Shields began his political career as a Brooks city councillor from 2004 until 2007 when he became Mayor. He remained as Mayor for three terms before stepping down to become MP.
The Bow River riding covers areas such as Brooks, Chestermere, Strathmore, Vulcan, and Taber.
