Heart disease is the number one killer of people in Canada.

That's according to a report from Stats Canada, and staff with the City of Chestermere recently declared Feb. 13 as Wear Red Canada Day in the city.

"Wear Red Canada is celebrated annually across Canada on Feb. 13 to raise awareness about women’s heart health. Heart disease is the number one killer of women worldwide and the leading cause of premature death in Canadian women. The good news is, 80 per cent of a woman’s risk factors are within her control, and heart disease is largely preventable," said the city in a news release.

The city is encouraging residents to learn more about heart health and how it can impact families.

"Join us in wearing red in support of the cause, and consider showing your support by using the hashtags #HerHeartMatters and #WearRedCanada," added the city.
