On January 18, Grande Prairie’s Esther Ling was announced the winner of the 1st Annual Grande Prairie Boys Choir Songwriting Competition with the winning song, “Cheeky Wind”.
Esther is a pianist, composer and singer songwriter, and it was such a joy for her to be able to share her original song.
“I think for me the best part was getting up there and sharing my original song with an audience. It's not very often, at least for me, to get that kind of opportunity to share original music with people that they’ve never heard.”
When asked about the story behind the song, she says: “I was inspired to write this song by a funny memory that my mother-in-law had shared with me, about my husband when he was a young child. It speaks to the cheeky behaviour of children and the interesting ways they find to try and get out of trouble.”
Esther is already considering entering next year’s songwriting competition which is expected to be even bigger.
You can hear the Grande Prairie Junior Boys Choir perform “Cheeky Wind” at their upcoming concert in March.
