Despite happening over half a year ago, the hailstorm that hit Calgary back in August continues to rack up costs.

According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) the total insured losses is now estimated to be around $3.25 billion, a rise from the $2.8 billion reported in January.

"The storm is the second-costliest disaster in Canadian history for insured losses and resulted in more than 130,000 insurance claims," wrote IBC in a news release.

The group said the majority of auto insurance claims have been completed, with the total insured damage to vehicles coming in at $1 billion.

"The damage was so extensive that roughly half of all vehicles damaged were total losses, meaning that the value of the vehicle was written off and customers opted for cash payouts in lieu of repairs."

60,000 homes in the Calgary area were impacted, including in Strathmore, Chestermere, and Carseland.

The summer of 2024 was the most expensive one on record in Canada for insurance claims, with half of the $8 billion in damages coming from Alberta alone.

Other events that caused extensive damage included the Jasper Wildfire, which destroyed half of the buildings in the town.
