Joanne Smyth and Yvonne Durnford from Brooks cashed in on winning tickets, taking home $100,000.
According to a news release from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, the duo had been buying Western 649 and Extra tickets together for a year.
“We buy our tickets every second week," said Durnford. “Joanne texted me asking what time I take lunch and then I didn’t hear back she showed up at my work with the news.”
Smyth recalled feeling pure shock at the news.
“I called my spouse first to tell him we won big and then headed to Yvonne’s work to tell her.”
Both Smyth and Durnford already have plans to spend the shared money.
“I just bought a new vehicle and now I can put a lump sum to pay it off,” added Durnford. “Then we can put away the rest into savings.”
“I’m paying some bills,” said Smyth. “And the rest is going to really put us in a healthier position for retirement.”
The pair bought their winning Western 649 and Extra ticket from Brooks Gas Bar at 5-731 Alberta Street W and matched the last six digits of the December 14 Extra draw: 3122239.
Brooks is a 140-kilometre drive from Strathmore.
