The Newsboys have a new lead singer—and they didn’t have to look far to find him.
Adam Agee, a guitarist with the Newsboys for three years, has been promoted to frontman.
The announcement follows Michael Tait’s decision to step down as lead singer after 15 transformative years with the Newsboys. About three weeks ago, Tait surprised fans with the news of his departure, explaining that after years of nonstop touring, he felt the time was right.
"While this may come as a surprise given I’ve been touring ever since college, I’ve made for me what is a monumental and heartfelt decision that it is time to step down from Newsboys." He said that the decision came as a surprise even to himself.
In a recent interview with Eyewitness News, Agee, who was once a part of the band Stellar Kart, announced that he is the fourth lead of the Newsboys.
"Tait kind of surprised us with some news about a month ago and we had the beginning of our tour in about four days so we rallied together and tried to figure out what we were going to do moving forward and we put together a show and it wound up being a sweet thing," said Agee.
Despite the change, Agee says their fans rallied around them making for an amazing night.
"It was just an amazing night. There were 2,000 people in this arena and it felt like 10,000 people singing along with all the songs and it was pretty special. Not going to lie, for me to be able to front the band that I had posters of on my wall when I was a kid, was pretty cool."
In addition to continuing their tour, Agee said the band returned to the studio to revisit and re-record some of their songs previously recorded by Tait, including their latest single "How Many Times."
"That was one of the things that we’ve been scrambling to try to figure out and get done," said Agee. "That’s actually a song that was one of the first songs I wrote for this Newsboys project a couple of years ago, and finally, it’s getting released. I had sung a bunch of background vocals and everything on there, but I hadn’t done the lead vocals. So we popped back into the studio and got that done real quick."
As the band moves forward with this new chapter, Agee says they remain focused on their mission.
"I said something at our first show that has become our rally cry," said Agee. "With this band, the messenger might change, but the message remains the same. So we're always going try to show the world the love of Jesus and we're going to do it in the most entertaining way that we can."
