The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after an on-duty police dog bit a child.

According to a news release, the incident happened after officers were called to investigate a stolen vehicle in the community of Erin Woods.

"In the process of searching for the suspect, the Police Service Dog (PSD) bit the young girl, who was in a field that was being searched. The child received minor injuries and was transported to hospital," wrote police.

Officers said they are providing support to the child and her family.

The release added that police won't comment further as ASIRT is now investigating.
