When you think of Drumheller, the things that spring to mind are dinosaurs, badlands, and desert area.

However, the valley is also known for its massive cottonwoods.

The town embarked on a flood mitigation process that saw many of the trees cut down.

"We questioned them and basically the wood was just going to be used for firewood and mulch, so we knew we had to do better by those trees," said Tony Miglecz, an organizer of the event.

Miglecz said some trees are over 200 years old, and mentioned the group was able to get a hold of the Carver Kings to look into using the trees for something else.

"When we spoke with Paul Frenette about doing an event out here, he suggested talking to Marina Cole because she's just outside of Medicine Hat."

Miglecz cited the lack of chainsaw carving events in Alberta as another reason to host it in Drumheller.

He said this year's festivities will be held just behind the World's Largest Dinosaur.

"In the empty parking lot there and right beside it is the Badlands Community Facility (BCF) where you can go over and see the Morenosaurus."

Miglecz told StrathmoreNow that the event attracts some of the most intricate carvers from around the world.

"This is like watching Connor McDavid and Connor Bedard and some of the top hockey players. Well, these are some of the top carvers."

Carvers like Marina Cole, Ryan Villiers, Simon O'Rourke, Chris Wood, Sylvia Itsen, Damon Gorecki, Hikaru Kodama, Igor Losgotuw, and Ryan Anderson will put their talents on display during the initiative.

"When you see the final things develop from these artists, they say that they just reveal what's already in there," added Miglecz.

Once the event is done the Town of Drumheller will keep around four of the pieces and six will go up for a live auction.

"I believe it's going to be online. They do have some smaller pieces; they call them quick carves. They take an hour off in the middle of their day and they do a quick carve," said Miglecz.

The event will be held from May 16-19 and residents can find more details here.
