Strathmore saw temperatures go from a risk of frostbite to above-freezing in the last week, but what are the record lows and highs in town for this time of year?

According to Andy Yun, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the lowest recorded temperature in the area was reported over 100 years ago.

"With Calgary being as cold as it is, the record low we had for the area has gone down as low as -45°C at the absolute coldest, and that was way back in 1893."

With the sudden change to positive temperatures, one might think that it couldn't get much warmer in February. However, Yun said that the warmest temperature recorded in February felt more like summer than winter.

"To break a new record, it would have to climb above 23°C, and that record was established in 1992, so it was a pretty warm winter back then."

As for 2025, the rest of the month is expected to have daytime highs above freezing with a high of 14°C on Thursday, Feb. 26.
