PARDS (Peace Area Riding for the Disabled Society) began its journey in 1984 as the South Peace Therapeutic Riding Association. Initially, it operated part-time with borrowed horses and facilities, driven by dedicated volunteers. On March 19th, 1985, it was incorporated as a Non-Profit Society, and in 1988, it adopted the name Peace Area Riding for the Disabled Society, or PARDS.

Shirley MacDonald, the Executive Director of PARDS, shared some insights into the organization’s history and growth. “PARDS originated in 1980 on some land in Wedgwood, and as it grew, we moved just east of town. In 2008, we started collaborating to build the amazing facility we have now by Evergreen. It’s a top-notch facility with a huge riding arena and stalls for our horses,” Shirley explained.

PARDS offers various programs, including therapeutic riding, cart riding, and hippotherapy, tailored to the clients’ capabilities. All clients are assessed to ensure they are placed in a program that best suits their needs.

Fundraising is a crucial part of PARDS’ operations. Shirley mentioned their major annual fundraiser, a carnival combined with a fun ride, scheduled for June 14th at Finch’s Farm. The event will feature a petting zoo, face painting, and a beautiful trail ride along the riverbank. “To ride in the fun ride, it’s a $125 registration fee, and participants collect pledges to raise funds,” Shirley noted.

For those interested in volunteering or donating, Shirley encouraged visiting their website or contacting the office directly. “There’s never an end of work when dealing with horses, and we always welcome volunteers and donations,” she said.

PARDS continues to make a significant impact in the community, providing therapeutic programs and support to those in need.
