The Mayor of Strathmore has changed course on his opinion towards garage and garden suites in town.

The bylaw allowing the suites was passed back in July 2024, with the idea being discussed by council for over four years.

However, Mayor Pat Fule claims that Strathmore's housing environment has "totally changed".

"We now have huge housing growth about to begin, with two subdivisions already started, and a variety of housing options to be available," wrote Fule. "We also have three different multi-unit projects in various stages of development, and the site of the old seed cleaning plant has one unit partially constructed."

According to Fule, he was contacted by many residents who voiced their comments and concerns about the bylaw.

"With all the building construction about to begin, I felt that that the private sector has really gotten going on building many housing options that will increase the inventory of homes to purchase, and units to rent," added Fule. "There now doesn't seem to be a real need for these suites in back yards or garages."

Fule created a motion for Strathmore town administration to bring a report to council on the bylaw to see if it could be rescinded.

The motion was passed by town council 4-3. There has been no definitive date on when the report will be presented.
