This spring is a momentous one for the Golden Age Centre as it celebrates 50 years of fostering healthy aging and vibrant community life.
Founded on March 10, 1975, the centre has long been a hub for individuals 55 and older, offering diverse programs, from nutrition and exercise to yoga, billiards, card games, and lively dances.
Always evolving, Elaine Jobin, Manager, is leading efforts to expand offerings for the 55 to 65 age group, introducing activities like hiking, biking, walking groups, book clubs, and restorative health workshops.
“We have all sorts of programs, and I’m always looking to add more. This year, I’m especially excited to bring in new activities for those aged 55 to 65.”
To mark this golden milestone, the centre is hosting a week-long celebration from March 10 to 14, with free access to all regular programs and games for members.
The festivities kick off on Monday, March 10 with a special gala and performance by the Tuesday Night Jazz Band. Attendees will also get an exclusive look at the centre’s long-awaited expansion project, alongside speeches from past and present board members.
One of the highlights of the weeklong celebration is an Open House and Luncheon on Thursday, March 13, when visitors can explore the centre’s beautiful facilities, diverse programming and consider membership.
On Friday, March 14th, the 50th anniversary week will wrap up with a 7pm dance featuring live music hosted by in-house musicians.
As part of the lead-up to the 50th anniversary, the public is invited to share their suggestions for a new name for the facility incorporating the phrase, “55 North”. The chosen winner of the contest will receive a gift card wallet filled with cards for local restaurants, businesses and services. Enter HERE.
For nearly 20 years, the Golden Age Centre has been planning a much-needed expansion. Now, with a $2.3 million project in the works, the centre aims to add 3,200 square feet to better serve its growing 700+ members. Fundraising is ongoing, with hopes to break ground in 2026.
Elaine Jobin emphasized the importance of community support, “We are a charitable organization, and we can provide tax receipts for donations. Membership is just $20 a year, which includes discounts on events and meals.”
Community members can support the expansion by donating, becoming a member, or contributing food items—such as vegetables, meat, and bread (though homemade baked goods cannot be accepted). The centre also offers affordable, nutritious meals, priced at $7 for members and $10 for the public, with the extra $3 helping sustain the lunch program.
There is also an opportunity for local businesses to sponsor the facility through naming rights of specific areas in the existing building and in the future expansion.
With a legacy spanning five decades, the Golden Age Centre remains a vital part of the community, and its future looks brighter than ever.
