Mounties have confirmed that a woman has died after her vehicle was struck by a train northwest of Airdrie on Thursday afternoon.

Just after noon, Airdrie RCMP, Airdrie Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and CP Rail Police responded to the scene on Township Road 274, east of Range Road 11.

According to a previous City of Airdrie news release, fire crews found the driver trapped and, working alongside paramedics, conducted a 20-minute extrication. At the time, officials said no further details would be released until the driver’s next of kin were notified.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada attended the scene.

The rail crossing on Township Road 274 has reopened, and traffic is moving normally.

RCMP confirmed the train was not carrying hazardous materials, and there was no risk to the public.
