"If you feel like blessing us with some muffins, we'll gladly take them."

Do you have a love of baking? Are you looking to benefit others with that passion and talent? Well, the Youth for Christ drop-in centre in Altona, Youth Unlimited, might just have the answer!

The drop-in centre recently came into possession of another freezer and spokesperson, Marty Falk, says they are looking to the community to help stock it for the breakfast program it hosts every Wednesday at the local high school, W.C. Miller Collegiate.

"We're always looking for baked goods," said Falk. "Muffins, cookies, brownies and more. You name it. As long as it doesn't have raisins in it," he joked.

Typically, they set out about 8 to 10 dozen items each week and it's usually all gone by the end, noted Falk.

While the organization has a dedicated group of people who regularly provide baked goods for the program, Falk says they appreciate any kind of support they can get.

"If you feel like blessing us with some muffins, we'll gladly take them."

Falk noted, because of the way the program is run, there are no parameters for how the food needs to be prepared.

"They can bake whatever they want. It doesn't matter what you want to put in it. We have a little sign that says that these are made outside of the school and, as high schoolers, they should know what they should or shouldn't eat."

Building relationships, one muffin at a time

According to Falk, up to 100 students take advantage of the casual offering, grabbing a quick bite to eat before class.

He explained, this is just another way of serving the teens that YFC supports, and to get into the high school and meet the kids where they're at.

"There's kids that come to the youth centre now who we met at the breakfast program. When they see our faces in the school, a kind of neutral area, then it's not as scary coming into the youth centre. They at least know who to expect and we can chat with them there. So, when they come in, it's a little less intimidating."

Anyone looking to use their talent and passion for baking to help YFC - Youth Unlimited continue building those relationships by providing baked goods for its breakfast program can call the organization at 204-324-5659 to arrange a drop-off time.
