Players from the East Wheatland Athletic Association will be recognized for their sportsmanship through an awards banquet taking place later this year.
The event will run on April 4 at Standard Hall with cocktails starting at 5 p.m. before a pizza supper an hour later.
"It was a great idea by the board to put this together to celebrate all the hockey players," said Drew Gregory, a local musician and volunteer with the banquet. "When you're in small little towns there's not much to do, so it's great when everybody comes out to the arenas for these things."
Following the supper, the event will feature an award ceremony and a dance, with five awards being issued for each U7, U9, U11, U13, and U15 team.
"All of those teams are going to be there together with parents, grandparents, and whoever else wants to come. It's open to everybody," added Gregory. "We're going to go through each time, say how their season went, and have a coach talk with each team."
The awards will include the best player, best defense, and more.
Gregory himself played hockey in Standard when he was growing up.
"It gave me a real sense of hometown pride and kept us coming back and living out there now. It's always been home to me, and a big part of that is playing team sports."
Admission to the event is free for players, coaches, and managers. For other residents looking to attend the event, admission costs $10.
