Ryan Straschnitzki is overcoming adversity every day of his life.

The former Humboldt Bronco was paralyzed from the chest down after a horrific bus crash that took the lives of 16 players in 2018.

During an upcoming speaking session at a mental health fair in Chestermere, he'll be sharing his story.

"I let them know a little bit about who I was before the accident happened, and who I am now and some of the moments of adversity that I faced and how that developed me into the person I am today."

Straschnitzki added that he hopes to let people know that daily struggles are inevitable, however, it's vital to grow and move forward.

He noted that his favourite part about public speaking is connecting with people.

"I feel like everyone has a story to share and it's important that people be heard."

He told StrathmoreNow that he's been able to travel across North America to showcase his journey.

Straschnitzki is also filming a documentary on his life and his wheelchair basketball career.

"We're about three-quarters of the way through. We have about another two months of filming," added Straschnitzki.

"Just to give some people insight as to kind of what goes on in my daily life, and some of the people that are closest to me. Teammates, family, friends that support me."

He's also chasing a goal of joining the 2028 Paralympic basketball team.

"I'd love to be a Paralympian, but we'll see what happens."

If Straschnitzki's life wasn't busy enough, he was recently recognized with a King Charles III Coronation Medal.

"It's exciting, and I'm very grateful for it, but I know there's still a lot more work that needs to be done," mentioned Straschnitzki.

The mental health fair will be held on Saturday, March 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Chestermere Rec Centre's MPP Hall.
