The Government of Saskatchewan is reminding anglers to remove their ice fishing shelters from provincial lakes as spring approaches, with deadlines set for March 15 south of Highway 16 and March 31 in northern regions.

Officials warn that rising temperatures can lead to unsafe ice conditions, making it dangerous to retrieve shelters left too long. Anglers are responsible for removing all structures and debris before the deadlines to avoid potential fines or confiscation of their shelters.

"Abandoned ice shelters create hazards for summer lake users and wildlife," the province stated in a release. "Proper disposal of waste and debris helps protect Saskatchewan’s lakes and ecosystems."

By law, ice shelters must display the owner's full name, address and phone number in letters at least 2.5 cm high. Structures cannot be left on shorelines after removal.

Anglers are also urged to exercise caution when travelling on ice, as slush, pressure ridges, and thermal cracks can indicate dangerous conditions.

Saskatchewan’s ice fishing season closes on March 31 in the southern and central regions and April 15 in the north. More information can be found in the Anglers Guide at saskatchewan.ca/fishing.
