The U11 AA Wheatland Hawks hockey team in Strathmore is hosting a tournament from March 27-30.

This is the first time the tournament will be held in the town, and Jodi Koester the chair for the provincial tournament explained that to bid they had to put together a package proving Strathmore has the necessary means to host.

"We had to make sure we could accommodate seven additional teams which is about 300 or 400 people in town so, we have the lodging for those people. We have the ability to feed all of those people."

The team also had to submit a legacy project in which they could not make any money for the team by hosting the provincials.

"We had to come up with something in the community that we can put excessive revenues towards that is related to hockey, we know that the outdoor rink has additional projects that are underway. We're excited to hope to be able to give them some money at the end of this," said Koester.

The Hawks team is not only made of players from Strathmore but from comminutes across southern Alberta.

Koester told StrathmoreNow that even though it's a little bit of work to be the provincial tournament chair, she is happy to do it because of the hard-working team they have.

"We have an amazing group of parents on this team and so a lot of it is delegation. Who wants to be in charge of this, and who wants to be in charge of that? They've all jumped up no problem."

The hockey tournament will also host a local market for vendors to set up and for residents to shop at.
