Crime statistics in the counties of Wheatland and Rocky View were laid out during a council meeting on Tuesday.

Staff Sgt. Mark Wielgosz, detachment commander with the Strathmore RCMP said the report highlights numbers from Oct. 1, 2024, to the end of the year.

Wielgosz added that the organization tackled the top three priorities of property crime, traffic safety, and community engagement within rural areas.

He told council that the RCMP's habitual offender program has been a huge help.

"Within quarter three we were managing and keeping an eye on 17 habitual offenders, which includes one problematic property."

There were two offenders in Wheatland County, two in Rocky View County, and 10 in Strathmore.

Break and enters, and motor vehicle thefts were also highlighted.

"Our break and enters were slightly elevated by one this quarter from the same timeframe last year. I can tell you that we had a 25 per cent reduction from our six-year historical averages," said Wielgosz.

A total of six break-and-enters were recorded in the quarter.

Vehicle thefts in Wheatland County dropped last year from four to two compared to 2023-24.

Wielgosz also discussed vehicle collisions, which saw a slight decrease from 59 to 57 compared to the previous year.

"The vast majority of the collisions that we're seeing in Wheatland County in quarter three are related to animal strikes as well as people who were speeding relative to conditions."

Officers received 399 calls for support in Rocky View County and 243 calls in Wheatland County during the quarter.
