Red and black Angus bulls will be on offer at McMahon Angus' second-annual bull sale
Categories

McMahon Angus’ second annual bull sale is coming up Wednesday, March 19 at the Mankota Weigh Station.

Red and black Angus yearling bulls are on offer. Black Angus genetics were purchased two years ago from Glen and Darla Briere at Glendar Angus. Red Angus genetics were bought out of the Running JR herd and go back to the legendary Flying K Ranch.

Bulls can be viewed at McMahon Hutterite Colony, 25 minutes southeast of Swift Current. Bull catalogue can be viewed here, and bulls on auction can be viewed on DLMS.

For interested buyers, Paul Waldner expressed the importance of seeing the breeding program before you buy; he invites anyone to come tour their ranch.

“We'd love to work with and tour anybody that’s interested in our cattle. We're only 25 minutes southeast of Swift Current, and only one and a half mile of gravel, so you're not going to dirty up your Dodge coming out here,” he laughed.

“We like to work hands on with people, get to know our customers, show them what we’ve worked hard for. We have an incredible passion for everything we do, whether it’s cattle, meat, or vegetables. That's kind of how we got into our meat side of things here, selling meat products as McMahon Produce and Meat.”

Waldner added that face-to-face interactions is a huge part of having thousands of repeat customers walk through their doors - or shop at their market gardens - each year.

McMahon Angus began their journey with the purchase of 10 commercial purebred red cows in 2013. Soon after, they expanded their herd with 100 sires from different breeders. While they weren’t originally set on purebred breeding, they received an offer they couldn’t refuse.

“A local breeder here, Running JR Ranch, offered to sell us 10 open red heifers every year. We were keeping records anyway, like birth weights and everything, so with that we named our breed McMahon Angus, and that’s how we slowly fell into the purebred side of things,” said Paul.

In 2022, after touring Glendar Angus down by Mankota, they unexpectedly offered Paul 70 of their herd, and the rest is history. “I called it a goose coming – we had a golden egg in our yard!” he said.

“We had our first McMahon Angus bull sale last year, and we couldn't thank the bidders and buyers enough for making it a huge success. We were just awestruck by the interest people had and the amount of people who came out and toured our ranch and spread the word to others too.”

This auction will be their second annual McMahon Angus auction, and they’re looking forward to connecting with the community again and sharing the progress their herd is making. They also hope to offer yearly female sales in the fall, though it’s not a solidified plan yet.

Every decision McMahon makes for their herd, whether it’s doing their research before bringing in new bulls or deciding which bulls to sell, is made with a passion for their work and for the animals. This same passion extends to McMahon Produce and Meat.

While the McMahon Colony has always travelled to market squares in Moose Jaw, Regina, and Swift Current, they only sold produce until quite recently.

Tim Waldner said, “Up until now, we would only bring small meat samples to the market. There were a lot of people who were hesitant to try it, but we would give them a taste anyway. It was that first foot in the door – or that first bite in the mouth,” he laughed, “that would get them hooked.”

As word spread from their Moose Jaw and Regina markets, Tim said he realized the interest in their meat products was a lot bigger than they ever expected.

“We’re happy people are enjoying our product, and we stand behind it,” he said.

“We've gotten to a point where you wake up in the morning and you think, where is this thing going to go? And it's just, we believe in the Lord. And that's kind of where we’ll leave it,” said Paul.

McMahon Produce and Meat sells premium meat and vegetable products. All meat, including beef, pork, and poultry, is homegrown and hormone-free. Their beef is dry-aged for 21 days before packaging.
