The Stone City Coffee Roasters team at their coffee bar in Steinbach Sobeys

Stone City Coffee Roasters has grown to become a household name across the Southeast, and they couldn’t be more grateful for all the love and local support. That’s why this Friday, March 14th, they’re inviting everyone to join the celebration at the Stone City Coffee Bar inside Steinbach Sobeys.

Colleen and Jay Wohlgemuth own the small-batch Steinbach-based roastery, and she speaks with excitement when sharing all their plans for this Friday at the coffee bar.

“On Friday, March14th, we’re open from 9 am until 5 pm, and the whole team is going to be there. We’re also setting up our events bar by the front door for samples as people walk in.

“We’re going to be sampling our microlots, our Columbia coffee we just got in. There will be all sorts of options! We’ll be doing pour-overs to highlight the difference, so they can try a pour-over and then try the drip coffee.

“We’re going to have a lot of specials, AND we’re going to have big doughnuts for only a dollar – maple-glazed apple fritters that are big enough to share! And giveaways!

“We’re giving away beautiful prize packages, including an amazing Fellow Opus Chronical burr grinder,” reveals Colleen. “We’re going to be doing demos, samples, and we’ll have a special feature drink Friday only – a Churro Cheesecake Cookie Macchiato. It’s so good, you guys!”

The story behind the coffee goes back to the year 2019, when Colleen says it was just a dream.

“The dream started with my brother-in-law who owns a roastery in California. He and Jay would often talk coffee and I got on board with that idea in 2019.”

“I was a cabinetmaker for most of my life,” reflects Jay. “I did some renovating as well. And all of a sudden, the coffee thing started taking off. Originally, coffee was just a fun thing – but it became full time.”

“More than full time,” Colleen adds with her signature infectious laugh.

Of course, if Stone City Coffee Roasters is celebrating five years in mid-March 2025… that means they launched their business at exactly the same time the world shut down in 2020.

“We couldn’t believe it,” says Colleen. “But we decided to pivot and start bringing coffee to people in their homes and we got our online system up and running. There was no daycare, there was no school. Our kids were at home and came with us to deliver coffee. Damian would earn ten cents bringing coffee to the door. He even got tips! People loved it.

“The support we got from our community encouraged us to persevere in a climate that felt very uncertain. We weren't sure if we'd all of a sudden get shut down if we got sick. There were just a lot of unknowns and the support we got from our community was a massive highlight. The support of retailers reaching out and asking for our coffee was also so encouraging.”

“Just for me, working together as a family, close to home and being able to do the bulk of our work right in our community – that’s huge,” adds Jay.

“And then the opportunity to put our coffee bar inside Steinbach Sobeys has been a huge highlight,” reveals Colleen. “Here we are, five years later, still roasting coffee. We survived and persevered and it’s been wild and fun!

“Jay and I are just so thankful for our community, and want to convey what that support has meant to us – so we’re throwing this big party to have fun with our customers. It’s our way of connecting with the community and saying thank you.”

Anniversary celebrations happen this Friday, March 14th at Stone City Coffee Roasters’ coffee bar inside Steinbach Sobeys from 9am until 5pm.
