A generation of elders that made its way on farms and towns solely with horse drawn power has all but vanished. That transition to motorized travel is the focus of the latest exhibit at the Humboldt and District Museum.
Exit the Horse: The Early Years of Canadian Motoring is a travelling exhibit that has motored on over to Humboldt from the Canadian Automotive Museum thanks to funding from the Government of Canada.
Among the interesting stories included in the exhibit is the origin of the Locomobile, a steam powered car launched in the early 1900s. The vehicle was produced by CCM, currently one of the top producers of hockey equipment for Canadians. It also produces bicycle as an offshoot of those early production efforts.
The exhibit has amazing photographs and great stories about what was happening across the nation during this age of automotive innovation. Check out Exit the Horse and a local perspective exhibit called The Open Road: Humboldt and the Age of Automobiles on display until April 30.
