Statistics from Curling Canada, released by the Moose Jaw and District Chamber of Commerce, show the scale and economic impact the BKT Tires World Men’s Curling Championship will have on Moose Jaw.

The championship takes place from March 29 to April 6 at the Temple Gardens Centre, where an estimated cumulative attendance of 55,000 to 60,000 curling fans is expected throughout the week.

“I would think it’d be monumental. I can’t remember how many world championships have been in Moose Jaw in my time or career here. You can see by the numbers what can be happening here,” said Moose Jaw and District Chamber of Commerce CEO Rob Clark.

This will be an opportunity to see the No. 1 ranked Bruce Mouat team representing Scotland, the Brad Jacobs rink for Canada, and defending world champion Niklas Edin of Sweden.

The economic spinoff is expected to be massive. Curling Canada estimates it will generate between $12 million and $15 million in economic activity for the city.

Clark said local businesses will have to be ready because it will be a busy week accommodating all the visitors.

“Even with all our unique shops, retail, and hospitality, the restaurants and hotels need to be prepped for it all. These people are coming through here and they’re staying here for one week,” Clark said.

All eyes will be on Moose Jaw throughout the week. Curling Canada expects over 22.6 million impressions from their social media accounts.

Meanwhile, there will be an estimated broadcast audience of over 5 million people nationally. With 13 teams from across the globe competing, the global broadcast audience is expected to bring another 5 million eyes on our city.
