It was a big weekend just outside of Strathmore at Tyrrell Riding Academy.

For their Finals Weekend event, the equestrian centre held a gymkhana competition on Saturday and a cowboy challenge on Sunday.

Owner Jessica Tyrrell said more than 100 riders attended the contest.

"It was really nice because we got to see how everybody had developed over the year and become stronger riders with better teamwork with their horses."

The winners of the event included:

  • Lead Line: Heather Thornley with "Blazin' Hot Gun"
  • Under 14: Leah Huxted with "Hot Player"
  • 14-40: Emily Schiffner with "Wild Rose Express"
  • 40+: Kristy-Lynn Maxwell with "Mambos Doc Whiz"

Although this marks the end of the season until November, the academy will continue to do gymkhana events throughout the summer.

"The challenges really emphasize the riders' and horses' relationship. It makes them navigate obstacles that require them to trust, communicate, and problem solve with each other," added Tyrrell.

According to Tyrrell, there has been a steady increase in attendees since they began hosting the annual event.

"At the beginning of the year, our riders might have been running 25-second runs on barrels, and by the end of the year they're running a 19, and that's really nice to see," said Tyrrell. "It's just a really great community."
