Residents may have noticed smoke in Strathmore this week.
The Strathmore Fire Department is doing a series of controlled burns throughout the town in anticipation of spring wildfires.
Fire Chief Dave Sturgeon touted the importance of the program.
"We burn off the fuel so that if a fire comes from outside of town, or starts within town, it doesn't get a chance to spread beyond our resources and gives us a better chance of fighting the fire."

The weather dictates how much local firefighters burn. Sturgeon said that crews will not do controlled fires during heavy winds.
"We have the option to battle the fire with either water or fire," added the fire chief. "If there's a big fire that's out of control, we'll go quite a bit ahead and burn out ahead of the fire, so that when it reaches that area, it dies down."

The controlled fires are a part of the Town of Strathmore's Hazard Reduction Plan, with a full document outlining the plan available on the town's website.
The firefighters will continue their work throughout the week.
