Canmore RCMP advised motorists to avoid the area west of Canmore after a motor vehicle collision closed the eastbound lane of Highway 1. The area has since been cleared.
Hazardous Weather Expected Across the Region
The closure coincided with hazardous travel conditions reported across the region. Environment Canada is predicting the potential for freezing drizzle and snow moving into the region. While Airdrie roads and the QEII were clear earlier this morning, flurries are likely throughout the day, with a 60 per cent chance of precipitation and a risk of freezing drizzle. Winds will remain light at 15 km/h, with temperatures hovering around -3°C and a wind chill near -8°C.
Conditions are expected to worsen tonight, with 2 to 4 cm of snow forecast and temperatures dropping to -7°C. Snow will continue into Saturday, bringing another 2 to 4 cm and temperatures staying near -5°C, with wind chills near -10°C. By Saturday night, flurries remain likely, and temperatures could dip as low as -9°C.
The immediate concern is the risk of freezing drizzle, which may create slick surfaces this morning before snow accumulates later today and into the weekend.
Highway Conditions Deteriorating in Surrounding Regions
Drivers heading north toward Carstairs, Didsbury, Olds, and beyond should be prepared for deteriorating conditions. Highway 2A from Township Road 292 to the junction with Highway 582 is partly covered in snow, with icy sections, snow-covered shoulders, and slippery conditions. Light snow has already begun falling in the area, contributing to ice buildup and creating hazardous driving conditions.
These challenges extend further north, where RCMP have been issuing travel warnings. Last night, Cochrane RCMP warned motorists to avoid travel on Highway 22 between Cochrane and Sundre due to extremely poor conditions. The advisory, shared by 511 Alberta after 8 p.m., urged drivers to postpone travel until conditions improve.
Further north, Leduc RCMP also urged motorists to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary, citing hazardous conditions. A tow ban was enacted in the Leduc area before 8:30 p.m., and no further updates on the ban have been issued since Thursday evening.
