A runner from Ste. Anne is encouraging people to get involved in the running community. Jessica Dubeau is hosting learn to run classes, aiming to make the sport more accessible for beginners.
Dubeau, who has been running for a decade, says she remembers how intimidating it was to start. “I found myself not having an idea of what I should be doing or how I should go about doing it,” she says. “I was intimidated to join groups in Winnipeg because I felt everybody was so experienced.”
Now, with 10 years of experience and plenty of trial and error, Dubeau wants to share what she has learned. “I just want to motivate people who have never run to give it a try,” she says.
The benefits of running
Dubeau originally started running to improve her health and find a personal hobby. “I didn’t really have anything that was my own,” she says. “I had running shoes and thought, well, this will be easy and cheap. Ten years later, I do not agree with that mentality,” she laughs.
Beyond the physical benefits, Dubeau says running helps her manage stress, build confidence, and push her limits. “It’s a different way of challenging myself, seeing what I can achieve when I put my mind to it.”
Balancing running and family life
As a busy mom, Dubeau knows the challenges of fitting in exercise. “I have a very supportive spouse, which helps,” she says. She also brings her son along when she can. “He loves coming along with me,” she shares. “His favorite thing is taking bubble gum, blowing bubbles, and saying hi to everyone we pass.”
For parents looking to stay active, Dubeau suggests making a plan. “Carve out that time, write it in your calendar, and make that appointment with yourself to show up for yourself.”
Finding motivation on tough days
Dubeau admits that some days, it’s hard to get out the door. “That one for me can be challenging,” she says. She recommends setting out clothes in advance and having a motivating playlist ready to go. “It’s about setting yourself up for success,” she explains. “Once you get started, or once you're finished, you’re like, ‘Oh, I’m so happy I went.’”
When she needs extra motivation, she thinks of the patients she has worked with in healthcare. “I used to work with Community Stroke Care Services,” she says. “Some of my clients had major health incidents and were never able to run again. I run for them.”
