RCMP are reminding motorists to drive safely and responsibly after Alberta RCMP laid 9,419 charges for aggressive and dangerous driving in 2024.
Reckless behaviors such as excessive speeding, distracted driving, tailgating, and road rage put drivers, pedestrians, and other road users at risk. To prevent these incidents and improve road safety, RCMP is encouraging motorists to follow key safety practices and report dangerous driving.
To help prevent aggressive driving incidents and ensure safer roads, RCMP provided the following safety tips:
-
Plan ahead: Allow extra time for commutes and anticipate potential delays to reduce stress.
-
Obey speed limits: Drive within posted limits and adjust for various road conditions.
-
Stay calm and avoid escalation: If you witness aggressive driving, do not respond with aggressive behavior. Avoid escalating the situation.
-
Maintain distance: If you are being tailgated or confronted by an aggressive driver, do not engage.
-
Seek safety if followed: Do not drive home if another driver is following you. Instead, proceed to the nearest police station or a safe, populated area and call police.
-
Lock doors and stay in your vehicle if confronted: If another driver confronts you, lock your doors, remain in your vehicle, and leave when safe to do so.
-
Report dangerous behavior: If you witness an incident, try to note key details, such as the vehicle’s color, make, model, and license plate number, as well as a description of the driver. Report the incident to the police as soon as possible.
-
Call 911 if in immediate danger.
To report aggressive driving, contact RCMP directly or call 911 in an emergency.
