Highway conditions in and around Airdrie remained treacherous on Wednesday morning, with snow, ice, and zero visibility reported across multiple routes.

According to 511 Alberta, Highway 2 is partly covered in snow south toward Calgary and north past the Highway 2A junction, with shoulder ice, icy sections, slush, and limited visibility reported.

A spun-out semi-truck affects southbound traffic on Highway 2 northwest of Carstairs, just after Township Road 310. Emergency crews are on the scene, and one lane is closed. The incident, first reported shortly before 5:30 a.m., is causing traffic congestion and delays, with motorists advised to be prepared to stop.

Winter conditions were also noted on Highway 72 east toward Beiseker, where snow-covered roads and zero visibility affect travel.

In Calgary, police say Stoney Trail N.W. is closed southbound from Crowchild Trail and Scenic Acres View N.W. to Nose Hill Drive. No reason for the closure was provided, and drivers are advised to use alternative routes.

No full closures have been reported near Airdrie, but motorists are urged to reduce speed and drive with caution. The affected roads are key arteries for commuters, school buses and commercial traffic.

Environment Canada ended its snowfall warning for the region, but light snow and flurries are expected to continue through the day. The forecast for Airdrie calls for a 60 per cent chance of flurries this morning and early this afternoon, with periods of light snow beginning later in the day. Winds will be up to 15 km/h, with a high of zero and a morning wind chill of minus 8.

Tonight’s forecast calls for two to four more centimetres of snow before clearing overnight. The low is expected to reach minus 7, with a wind chill near minus 12.

Skies are expected to clear Thursday morning, with a high of plus 2 and a morning wind chill of minus 12. Thursday night is forecast to be clear with a low of minus 14.
