Strathmore residents have seen considerable savings at the pumps over the past few days.
On Apr. 1, the carbon tax was paused for consumers, leading to an 18 per cent price drop across town.
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis with GasBuddy, discussed the impact that the consumer carbon tax had on local gas prices.
"On average, I would expect it to save around $6 to $10 per fill up for Canadians, depending on if they consume gasoline or diesel," said De Haan. "This would amount to anywhere from $300 to $600 a year."
De Haan noted there are many other factors that contribute to the cost of gas.
"Things like tariffs, the state of the economy, and overall consumption."
With a federal election expected this month, the result could also impact the cost of gas.
"If the carbon tax is resumed, reimplemented, or shifted in some way, consumers down the road could be facing a new version of the carbon tax," added De Haan. "Whether or not the election bears any change in that is uncertain. Depending on who is elected, it will take an act of Parliament to make that pause permanent."
As of Apr. 3, the current cost of gas in Strathmore is $1.30 per litre.
