A quick response from the Steinbach Fire Department and the use of fire extinguishers helped prevent a mobile home fire from spreading on Saturday.
Crews were called around noon to a residence on Aspen Five Drive in the Aspen Grove mobile home park. While smoke was not visible from the street, firefighters worked inside the home and under the unit to ensure the fire was fully out.
Assistant Fire Chief Trevor Schellenberg says the homeowner noticed smoke and fire near the furnace and immediately used a fire extinguisher. A neighbour also assisted with another extinguisher.
"When crews arrived, they used a small amount of water to cool off some hot spots and helped with ventilation," says Schellenberg. "We located an electrical unit by the furnace with a melted plastic cover."
He says the fire was contained to the furnace area and there was no smoke or water damage. One person was home at the time, and no injuries were reported.
An ambulance and RCMP responded as a precaution but did not remain at the scene. Fire crews had cleared the area before 1 p.m.
Schellenberg says this was a quick call and highlights the importance of having working fire extinguishers in the home.
