The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is asking young Canadians to help name a group of newborn horses that could one day be part of its iconic Musical Ride.

This year’s “Name the Foal” contest calls for names starting with the letter “B”, as the RCMP continues its tradition of assigning each year’s foals names beginning with the same letter of the alphabet.

As many as 10 foals are expected to be born this spring at the RCMP’s breeding farm in Pakenham, Ont., and the selected names will be given to each.

To be eligible, participants must be 14 years old or younger, live in Canada, and submit only one entry before the April 25 deadline. Teachers may also submit entries on behalf of their classrooms.

Winners will receive a prize pack that includes a photo of the foal they named, a certificate signed by the RCMP commissioner, and an engraved horseshoe made by an RCMP farrier. One winning classroom entry will also receive a framed photo and certificate.

The final selection will be made by a panel from the RCMP Musical Ride and Heritage Branch, with winners announced later this spring on the RCMP website and social media.

More information and the entry form can be found on the RCMP’s official website:
