After 63 years of cherished memories in its current location, the Jolys Regional Library, located in St Pierre-Jolys, is officially moving into a new space, and Krista Maynard, the library’s new head librarian, couldn’t be more excited. The move represents not just a fresh start, but a new opportunity for the library to continue playing a vital role in the community.

“We are feeling a range of emotions,” said Maynard. “This iconic space holds many cherished memories. Over the years, residents have come together here to share stories, be creative, discover something new, make a friend, and so much more. I spoke with a volunteer this week whose daughter took her first steps at the library. Those moments will never be forgotten.”

The move is necessary after growing concern from the Red River Valley School Division for student safety due to an incident in June 2024, which caused the Superintendent to announce that starting in September 2024, the Jolys Regional Library would be closed to the public during school hours. This decision caused great concern for residents of the area, and after many conversations with the Village Council, a new location for the Jolys Regional Library was found.

Grateful for current location; excited about the new space

Maynard took a moment to express gratitude to the various organizations and individuals who made this move possible.

“I am very grateful for the Red River Valley School Division and the École Heritage School community. Their support has played an integral role in our growth and success. The trust and collaboration we’ve built together are invaluable.”

The Village of St-Pierre-Jolys and the RM of DeSalaberry have supported the library's upcoming move. Maynard also expressed thanks to the library's dedicated staff and volunteers.

“Our library team has been so flexible and committed to serving our patrons, and I am deeply grateful for that,” she said.

As head librarian, Maynard recognizes the importance of being responsible stewards of public funds.

"We are entrusted with public money, and we take that responsibility seriously,” she explained. “But with this new space, I am excited for the future and the role we will continue to play in enriching the lives of our patrons.”

Getting ready for the move

When asked about the moving process, Maynard had nothing but praise for the community's support.

“I am amazed and humbled by the volunteers who have given their time, energy, and skills to help us pack up,” she said. “In just one week, our team and volunteers packed almost 500 boxes.” Local businesses even helped by donating boxes to make the move easier.

Despite all the packing, there’s still more work to be done before the library is officially open in its new space. Maynard is hopeful for a grand opening by the end of May.

“The Village of St-Pierre-Jolys council and construction team have been working tirelessly, and I believe the only things left are some painting and electrical work,” she said.

Until then, Maynard notes that residents with Jolys Regional Library books currently in their possession, please drop them off at their earliest convenience, as the drop-box is still open. She says that while residents are not able to check out paper books, their digital library remains open.

Introducing the new Jolys Regional Library's head administrator

The Jolys Library's new head librarian was born and raised in Thompson, MB. Then, 25 years ago, Maynard and her family moved to St-Pierre-Jolys. Her professional journey in libraries began in the River East Transcona School Division, where she spent over a decade working in elementary schools. She also worked part-time at the William Falk Library at Providence College.

While Maynard is new to public libraries, she’s excited about her new role.

“I’m embracing this role with enthusiasm and an open heart,” she said. “I may have much to learn, but I’m eager to continue growing in this community.”

Looking ahead, Maynard shared her vision for the future of the library.

“My ultimate goal is for the library to become the central hub of the communities we serve,” she said. “We want to meet the diverse needs of everyone by providing free and open access to a wide range of resources.”

Residents of St-Pierre-Jolys and the RM of DeSalaberry can take advantage of free library memberships, but Maynard is quick to emphasize that anyone is welcome to visit, even without a membership. The new library is located at 479 Turenne Street, and the library is active on social media, where residents can stay updated.

Looking for a library pet

And in a lighthearted note, Maynard ended the interview with a fun request: “If any librarians out there have experience with adopting a library cat, I’d love your advice! We’ve already brainstormed some names—Dewey, Paige, and Libby are our top contenders!”

With the library’s new chapter just beginning, it’s clear that the Jolys Regional Library will continue to be a hub for learning, creativity, and connection in the community. Stay tuned for more updates and the official opening soon!
