With warmer weather upon us, we're starting to see more motorcycles on the roads.

Acting Alberta RCMP media relations manager Cpl. Troy Savinkoff offered this advice: "The one thing we see with motorcycles is that they have a smaller profile. Oftentimes, they're a little harder to see. This is especially true in intersection-related collisions, where motorists crossing highways may not see a motorcycle as clearly as they would another vehicle."

He reminds drivers to always ensure they fully clear the intersection before proceeding.

Savinkoff adds that motorcyclists tend to turn differently from other vehicles, so it’s important to provide them with extra space.

He also has advice for those operating motorcycles at this time of year.

"There's still a lot of gravel on the road. It hasn't been cleared off completely, especially on the shoulders. Motorcycles are at particular risk when they hit gravel, as it can lead to a loss of control. If riders inadvertently hit the shoulder, it can have serious consequences due to the sudden lack of traction."

Another key reminder is to always ride within your skill level and not trying to match the pace of others around you.
