Manitoba's police watchdog says it will not be authorizing charges following a police shooting that killed a man near La Broquerie.

On May 24 last year, RCMP officers were patrolling highway 52 near La Broquerie after getting several calls about a suspicious man.

They found a vehicle stopped on the highway, where a man with an "edged weapon" was reportedly choking the woman behind the wheel, police explained at the time.

The man was ordered to step away, officers say, and approached police while holding the weapon. When asked to drop it, he did not.

A shot was fired by one of the officers, after which police say the man fell.

CPR and first aid were provided, the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) says, but the man was pronounced dead on the scene.

IIU investigators were assigned to the investigation and one subject officer and five witness officers were designated, the police watchdog says, adding three civilian witnesses also provided statements.

After "due consideration of all the circumstances" the IIU says the investigation is complete and the matter closed.
