A 16-year-old boy was seriously injured after being struck by a police vehicle responding to a firearms-related call on the Kawacatoose First Nation Tuesday night.

According to Saskatchewan RCMP, the incident occurred at approximately 10:10 p.m. on April 8 as a Punnichy RCMP officer was en route to the call, travelling along Kandahar grid road.

The police vehicle struck a pedestrian near a rural residence, approximately 600 metres from the main community site. The officer, who was not injured, immediately called for emergency medical services and administered first aid until paramedics arrived.

STARS Air Ambulance transported the injured youth to hospital in Regina, and he was later transferred to Saskatoon for further treatment.

The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has been notified and will investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and the pedestrian’s injuries. This step is required under The Police Act, 1990 whenever serious incidents involve police.

RCMP say the firearms-related call that prompted the response remains under investigation.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the Saskatchewan RCMP said it is disclosing details of the incident as part of its “ongoing commitment to transparency.”

Further information will be provided by SIRT as its investigation proceeds.
