As part of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, running April 13–19, Alberta RCMP is shining a spotlight on the crucial work of its Operational Communications Centre (OCC) staff, and launching a new province-wide tool to support them.

The new non-emergency phone line, 310-RCMP (310-7267), is now available for all Albertans to report incidents that don’t pose an immediate threat to public safety. The goal is to streamline reporting, reduce pressure on 911 services, and ensure frontline officers can focus on high-priority calls.

“310-RCMP was created to help eliminate confusion about which detachment someone should call if they experience a non-emergency that doesn’t require police attendance,” explained Chris Spence, Director of the Operational Communications Centre in Alberta. “We encourage people to report non-emergencies as this helps us focus frontline efforts on high-priority calls and deploy resources in areas that need it most.”

OCC operators, often the first point of contact when someone calls the police, play a vital role in keeping communities safe. Working 24/7 year-round, they assess the urgency of each call and determine how to direct it, whether to a detachment or to the Alberta RCMP’s Call Back Unit (CBU). The CBU is a team of officers dedicated to investigating lower-risk cases that don’t require an in-person response.
