Steinbach Regional Secondary School (SRSS) is gleaming with a metallic sheen after nine of its students brought home medals for their successes in Skills Manitoba.

"We're very excited and we're thankful for the commitment by the teachers and the success of the students," says Joe Thiessen, superintendent of the Hanover School Division (HSD).

As a part of the competition, the HSD says students participate in challenges that test their skills that are necessary in trades and technology careers.

"Over 475 high school, post-secondary and apprentice students compete in 42 skilled trades and technology contests in six industry sectors," the division says.

It says its gold medalists, all from the SRSS, this year are Connor Brick brought home a gold medal in cabinet making, and Reanna Friesen a gold medal in welding.

Brick and Friesen will represent Team Manitoba on May 27 and 31 at the National Skills Competition, the division says.

Bringing back silver was John Rylen Funk for autobody repair, Tyler White for cabinet making, Nick Fruehauf for electrical installations, Teresa Klippenstein for hairstyling, and George Nelson for outdoor power and rec equipment.

Taking home bronze was Paxton Dueck for cabinet making, and Claudia Hildebrand for car painting.

This is not the first of the division's, or SRSS', success when it comes to Skills Manitoba.

Last year, seven of the high school's students took home medals. Four of those went on to win medals at the national level.

The year before that, five SRSS students won gold at the provincial competition.
