A new non-emergency complaint line has been launched by the Alberta RCMP.

It was announced as part of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, which runs from April 13-19.

The line can be reached by dialing 310-RCMP, or 310-7267, which isn't subject to long-distance charges and does not require an area code prefix.

“310-RCMP was created to help eliminate confusion about which detachment someone should call if they experience a non-emergency that doesn’t require police attendance,” said Alberta Operational Communications Centre director Chris Spence in a media release. “We encourage people to report non-emergencies as this helps us focus frontline efforts on high-priority calls and deploy resources in areas that need it most.”

Calls to the line will be assessed by RCMP Police Dispatchers, who determine if the call should be dispatched to a local detachment or passed along to the RCMP's Call Back Unit.

Examples of the kind of non-emergency situations that should be directed to the line include minor motor vehicle collisions, lost property, and theft or property damage under $5,000.

Municipal Enforcement services in Okotoks and High River have complaint lines of their own, as well as online forms that can be submitted on the towns' respective websites.
