There’s a lot happening this spring at the Mennonite Heritage Village (MHV) in Steinbach, and Jo-Ann Friesen, the museum’s Visitor Experience Administrator, is absolutely thrilled.

“My job is to make sure your visit is one you’ll remember,” Friesen said. “Whether it's the retail shop or the general store or even just making sure everything's safe and welcoming, it’s about how you experience the museum from every angle.”

And it’s definitely going to be a memorable weekend at the MHV.

“This Saturday, April 19, is The Great Easter Egg Hunt” Friesen said. “There are going to be about 65,000 eggs and candy scattered all over the grounds. It’s a free event, and it’s just such a fun way to celebrate with the community.”

The big egg hunt is hosted in partnership with A&W, AM1250, Mix 96, Country 107, and SteinbachOnline. The museum will open its doors on Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm, with a mini hot dog BBQ from 11:30 am to 1 pm., for a small charge of $5, which will go toward supporting the museum.

And there’s even more opportunity to give back.

“We’re also encouraging people to bring a ‘tin for the bin’ to help Southeast Helping Hands. We do this at a lot of our events. It’s an easy way to support the community.”

Get Involved: Volunteer Night

Friesen says, if you’ve ever dreamed of making waffles the old-fashioned way, blacksmithing, or just getting a taste of what it’s like behind the scenes at a living history museum, now’s your chance.

“We’re holding a Volunteer Orientation on Thursday, April 24. It starts with a BBQ at 6:00 pm, and then we’ll have the info session from 7 pm to 9 pm. No need to pre-register, just come on down and check us out. You might discover something you really enjoy.”

Spring Market and Season Kick-Off

Then, on Saturday, April 26, the MHV is hosting its annual Spring Market, which Friesen says is “how we kick off our season.”

“We’ve got over 30 local vendors, everything from jewelry to soaps, microgreens, baked goods, crochet, home décor, you name it. We’re even planning on having horse-drawn wagon rides if the weather cooperates, and a children’s craft corner so the kids can join in the fun.”

And of course, there’ll be food. “Our lovely auxiliary ladies are making waffles and white sauce, this time served in our café inside the main building.”

More Delicious Days Ahead

The museum’s outbuildings officially open on Thursday, May 1. Friesen notes that the day will bring back the much-loved “All You Can Eat Soup and Bun Day.”

Then on Sunday, May 4, it’s time to bring your appetite again.

“We’re doing an all-you-can-eat perogie and farmer sausage buffet. It’s just so exciting.”

Time to Get a Membership?

For folks planning to come more than once this season, Friesen says a membership is a great investment.

“It pays for itself really quickly,” she explained. “You get discounts in the restaurant and gift shop, and even at other museums. But more than that, you’re supporting the work we do here, for families, and for the community.”

There’s no shortage of reasons to visit the Mennonite Heritage Village this spring, and Friesen can’t wait to welcome you.

“We’re here for our community,” she said simply. “Come on down, it’s going to be a great year.”
