The Local Urban District (LUD) committee of Blumenort is lowering its mill rate for 2025.

However, Chair Kevin Medeiros says taxes will still be going up on the LUD portion of their tax bill.

"The bill is going to increase because of assessment this year," he explains. "We knew the assessment was going to be going up this year for everyone. That was one of the reasons why we wanted to drop our mill rate."

According to Medeiros, for an average residential property assessed at $350,000, Blumenort residents will see their taxes go up by $162 on the LUD portion of their tax bill.

Medeiros notes their mill rate has remained steady the last three years at 4.255 mills. For 2025, it is lowering to 3.885 mills.

In 2025, the LUD committee will be raising $538,927, which is up from $507,218 in 2024.

Medeiros says there are four significant projects that the LUD of Blumenort is hoping to tackle this year. Those projects include:

Parkview Bay Repavement
Remove existing asphalt, replace curb and gutter as required, reshape and add required base material, and repave with 75 mm asphalt surface.

Stoney Creek Pond Asphalt Pathway
Prepare new base along existing granular pathway, install 2.0 m wide asphalt pathway, and landscape as required.

Crestview and Edgemont Concrete Sidewalk
Remove existing fill material and install 1.5 m wide concrete sidewalk on back side of curb along Crestview and Edgemont.

The fourth project is the creation of a dog park. Planning has begun for the dog park in the green space along Harvest Bay.

"A lot of people that have kind of been requesting the park," says Medeiros. "We're trying to design it in a way that is best for that little area."

He notes that with projects like this one, there are always people for and against. But Medeiros says they want to create a proper space for dogs in the community.

Meanwhile, the LUD of Blumenort held its annual general meeting (AGM) March 31st at the fire hall. Medeiros says he is hoping they can attract more community members to their AGM next year.
