A familiar spring tradition returned to Steinbach Saturday morning, as families gathered at the Mennonite Heritage Village for the 4th annual Great Easter Egg Hunt, hosted in partnership with A&W Steinbach.

Last year’s event saw around 1,100 participants, but organizers say this year’s turnout was even higher.

Scramble brings smiles, sunshine, and sweet treats

The popular event is less of a traditional egg “hunt” and more of a lively scramble, as kids rush to gather chocolate eggs spread across the museum grounds. The mild weather helped draw a large crowd, and organizers say the turnout reflected strong community support.

“It was a fun time by all,” said Derek Williamson of A&W Steinbach. “About 1,300 people showed up and had fun gathering eggs. So it's amazing that that many people can show up to support the Easter weekend — community, fun, chocolate.”

Williamson noted that the partnership with Mennonite Heritage Village continues to be a strong fit for the event.

“This venue — there’s room for everyone, and it’s history, right? So we can come celebrate a holiday, all learn about history and enjoy ourselves,” he said. “It’s community.”

First free admission day of the season

The Great Easter Egg Hunt also marked the first free admission day of the year at the museum. Executive Director Robert Goertzen said it’s a great way to welcome the public and showcase the space.

“We were just thrilled to see so many people from the community show up,” said Goertzen. “Could be newcomers, could be people who have just moved in in the last few years, and could be grandparents who haven't come for a decade or more, but they’re bringing their grandkids.”

While summer demonstrations were not yet underway, Goertzen said the event gave visitors a chance to explore the museum grounds, enjoy the fresh air, and learn more about what’s coming up.

“We've got a spring market coming next week and we've got Manitoba Day, which is another free admission day on May 10,” he added. “So lots of reasons to come this spring and throughout the summer.”
