Emmy award-winning comedian Nate Bargatze is using his comedy as a service to God.
Although he does not want to be labelled as a faith-based comedian, Bargatze says that he is trying to create shows that are safe for the entire family.
"I am second to God. Second to your family, second to the audience, second to everybody," said Bargatze in an interview with The New York Times. "You live to serve, so it’s very much a calling in that aspect. But it’s trying to ride that balance where I don’t want anybody that’s not this or that — I just want to make something where all of them can be in the room together."
He says by keeping himself without a label, he is able to reach everyone.
"I just want to make something that all of them can be in the room together. And I feel it's driven on a bigger purpose for me."
Bargatze says what he is experiencing now through his shows is a part of his testimony.
"That’s where the drive is coming from to make sure you can bring your child to my stand-up show," said Bargatze. "I think about moments I have with my daughter. Going to the movies with your family, because it’s fun to watch your kid try to talk you into buying candy and popcorn. All these little silly moments that you think back on. So I think I’m going through it now, constantly reminding myself that this life is not about me."
Nate grew up in a Christian home and attended Christian school. His dad, Stephen, did not, but he attended a Presbyterian church so he could play on their baseball team, which eventually led him to give his life to God during a mission trip in Texas. Stepen had plans to become a preacher, but he was told he could never do it due to a speech impediment caused by a dog attack.
However, Stephen went on to be a clean comedian and a professional magician, and now he is watching his son succeed in the same industry.
Nate has gone on to have a successful career leading the largest-grossing comedy tour and hosting Saturday Night Live twice. He is also part of a new comedy special on Netflix and preparing to host the 77th Emmy Awards this fall.
