Currently in Manitoba, there are 20,300 Manitobans who have a dementia diagnosis.
Founded forty years ago, the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba exists so that all Manitobans affected by dementia receive the help they need today and have hope for the future.
As a province-wide organization, the Society seeks to achieve its mission by supporting individuals and families with First Link education and support programs, building dementia-friendly communities and funding research, because they know that it's not just an individual, but it's families and friends who are impacted by the disease.
"We did a survey a couple years ago and over 60% of Manitobans said that they had a close friend or family member impacted by dementia," shares CEO Erin Crawford, "and we know also that that number's going to double in the next 25 years."
"So, we expect by 2050 that there will be about 40,000 Manitobans with dementia," adds Crawford, "So, it's something that we're hearing a lot about. And it is something that a lot of people are impacted by. And it's something that we at the Alzheimer's Society want to make sure that people aren't navigating all on their own because it's, you know, it can be difficult, but it can also be made much less difficult and much less stressful with the right supports in place."
"And we're here to support Manitobans who are either have a dementia diagnosis themselves or are supporting somebody who has a dementia diagnosis such as our friends or neighbors or colleagues," continues Crawford. "And also, to provide information for the general public, those people who aren't currently impacted by dementia and who don't want to be, how they can protect their brains, maintain their brain health and reduce their risk of dementia."
